Champions once again

Gladiators repeat winning 2OT thriller

The WBA's best two teams and best two players were on display Saturday night.

But there was only one trophy for the taking, and the Rome Gladiators made sure it belonged to them.

Again.

Showing great poise and relentless depth, the Gladiators claimed their second straight WBA title by earning a 125-114 double-overtime victory over Cartersville in the league's championship game at Shorter's Winthrop King Centre.

"This one was sweeter than last year," said head coach Harold Ellis. "We proved tonight that we have the best 12 players in this league, hands down. We've had the best record all year and tonight was the final proof of who's No. 1."

Rome and Cartersville entered the playoffs as the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, and the match-up of the two teams provided for a thrilling championship game.

But Rome ultimately showed itself to be the deeper squad, outscoring Cartersville 15-4 in the second OT to put an exclamation point on their third season of existence.

"We have at least five guys who come off the bench for us that could be starting for any team in this league," said forward Edmund Saunders, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

"Our depth has been big for us all year, and it was the difference tonight."

The league announced before the game that Rome's Shaun Fountain and Cartersville's Mike Dean were being named the WBA's Co-Players of the Year. And both players proved themselves deserving of the honor.

Dean, the former Coosa star, scored 29 points on 11-of-28 shooting. Fountain finished with 25 points, nine assists and six rebounds and was named the playoffs' MVP to go along with his regular-season award.

"Winning the two awards is great," said Fountain. "It shows that hard work, prayer and believing in yourself go a long way.

"But more than (the individual honors), I'm just thrilled that we won the title," he said. "Throughout my basketball career, I've come close so many times but I never got over the hump until tonight."

But Cartersville certainly made the Glads work for this one. Though the Warriors never led at any stage of the game, they picked some opportune times to tie the score.

They tied it for the first time all night with 1.5 seconds to go in regulation, then overcame a seven-point deficit in the first overtime to tie it again and send it into double OT.

But Rome opened the second extra session with a 10-2 run and held on from there.

Five Rome players finished in double figures. In addition to Fountain and Saunders, Ray Cunningham scored 18 points, Rashiem Wright scored 17 (including nine in the second overtime) and Carl Edwards finished with 10.

"We won this thing as a group just like we've done all season long," said Ellis, who was named the league's Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Cartersville's David Archer. "I'm so proud of this team."

The WBA is an assemblage of far-flung teams from all over the Southeast. But there wasn't much travel required for the teams - or their fans - for Friday's all North Georgia affair, which was played in front of a good-sized crowd at the WKC. (The building was roughly three-quarters full).

"I can't thank the fans enough," said Ellis. "This gym had a lot of energy tonight and they've supported us so well the past two years."

The Glads opened the night with a 9-0 run, led 27-20 at the end of the first quarter, 53-41 at the half and 79-67 at the end of the third. But the Warriors, led by Dean, charged back to tie it in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for the late drama.

"Give Cartersville credit, they gave us a really hard test," said Saunders. "But we showed who was the best team." Again.

NOTE: Former Atlanta Hawk Mike Glenn, who played at Coosa, was the emcee of the pregame and postgame ceremonies.

(Atlanta, GA) With an impressive 3-0 record for week number eight, the Rome Gladiators have been chosen as the WBA Team of the Week for June 10 - June 16. The Gladiators, who also won the coveted WBA Team of the Week award earlier in the season, improved to 15-1 overall and 14-0 in the Central Conference, with a 113-101 victory over Kentucky in Elizabethtown on June 12. Carl Mitchell paced Rome with 19 points and 10 rebounds in Kentucky. Rome got a 120-109 come from behind win on the road at Gainesville. The Glads trailed by as many as 10 in the second half, when Harvey Thomas took things into his own hands and leading his troops to a win. Thomas finished with 30 for Rome, as they upped their record to a league-leading 17-1. The Gladiators capped the week off with a 138-114 victory over Cleveland. Mitchell had 22 and MaJic Dorsey netted 21 in the win, as Rome improved to 18-1 and a perfect 16-0 in the Central Conference. The win over Cleveland ran Rome's current win streak to eight. Congratulations to the Rome Gladiators on a great week number eight.

Macon Blaze chosen WBA Team of Week for June 3 - June 9... - June 19, 2005

Normally the Team of Week is chosen based on what a team has done during a defined period of days, but for week seven we have to take into account what the Macon Blaze have done over a period time - which is effectively turn their season around. Extending the parameters beyond June 3 - June 9 is essential because the players on this team need recognition for what they have been able to accomplish after an 2-7 start to the 2005 season. After the dismal beginning, and up til June 12, the Blaze had won 7 of 9 games to even it's record at 9-9 overall and 7-7 in the Eastern Conference. During one stretch they won 5 of 6, with the only loss being to arch-rival Southern Crescent, on a last second shot. During that stretch, the Blaze endured a three-game set against the always tough Gainesville Knights, winning all three games. With recent personnel changes, the Blaze are now a solid contender for the WBA title. Congratulation to the Macon Blaze on a solid WBA week number seven.

(Atlanta, GA) The Rome Gladiators' Harvey Thomas (204-F-82, college: Baylor) has been chosen as the WBA Player of the Week for June 10 - June 16 - week number eight. Thomas averaged 20.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals per game, in only 25 minutes of work per game on a very deep-laden Rome squad. His efforts for the week helped to lead the Glads to a perfect 3-0 record. Thomas, for the season, is averaging 17.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, while shooting 58.9% from the field and 71.2% from the free throw line. Thomas' biggest feat of the week, was leading his team to come from behind wins in each game, including a 120-109 win over Gainesville on June 14. With Rome down by double-digits in the 4th quarter, Thomas saddled the Glads on his back, while he finished with 30 points in the win. Thomas, who has been donned with the nickname "plastic" by his Rome constituents, also recorded a triple-double against Cleveland with 19 points, 12 boards and 11 assists - only the second triple double of the 2005 WBA season. Harvey has been invited by the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers to an official workout on June 22-23. Wish him great success and congratulations for a super week number eight of the WBA season.

Macon's Tucker named WBA Player of Week for June 3 - June 9... - June 19, 2005

Flem Tucker

One of the biggest reasons the Macon Blaze have been able to turn their fortunes around was the mid-season acquisition of Flem Tucker (183-G, college: Albany St.). Tucker came over to Macon from the Cleveland Majic a month into the season, and Macon has notched nine wins against 3 defeats since. During week number seven, Tucker, who played for Macon last season, averaged 25 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.4 steals, while shooting 50% from the 3-point line (6-12) and the field as a whole (28-56). Macon went 2-1 for the week, with Tucker turning in a most-stellar performance with 27 points, 6 assists, 5 steals, and 3 rebounds, while shooting 9-16 from the field in a tough 106-104 loss at Eastern Conference nemesis Southern Crescent on June 5th. Since joining the Blaze, Tucker is averaging 22.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.6 steals, while shooting 49.2% from the field and 40% from the 3-point line. Congratulations to Flem Tucker (183-G, college: Albany St.) for a super WBA week number seven.
